‘Sail in company’: Around Bere Island

          Sunday August 10th 2008

Plans Afoot for the FOURTH  Sail in Company Around Bere Island

Sunday 10thh August has been fixed for the 2008 circumnavigation of the Island.

11.00 h meet at Marina; 12.00 start

The idea is classically uncomplicated. A mixed fleet of boats, big and small, power and sail gather at Lawrence Cove Marina, sail around Bere Island and then celebrate the achievement with a few beers. It really is as simple as that.

The first year, four boats took part and opted for the anticlockwise route. In 2006 the fleet grew to six boats and the direction was clockwise. The average elapsed time was four and a half hours, just right for a sense of achievement without too much hard work. 2007 was very succesful as well with again six boats and a great afterparty.

The objective of the exercise is relaxed pleasure, it is not a race. The leading boats paused in Piper Sound last year to allow the stretched-out fleet to close up again. Photography, mackerel fishing or that favourite boating activity of doing absolutely nothing at all, are encouraged. In 2006 and 2007 all participants provided refreshments and were welcomed after the trip aboard Peter Killan's magnificent ketch appropriately named Pure Magic.

The 2008 date has been chosen again to coincide with the Bere Island festival. How many boats will we have this year? I know I wouldn't miss it!
